Pittsburgh’s Climate Protection Initiative

The Pittsburgh Climate Protection Initiative is the city’s effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and slow the effects of global warming. That effort can save taxpayer dollars by reducing city spending for energy, improve the city’s air quality, and boost the area’s economy with new jobs.

The Green Building Alliance is co-manager of the Initiative, working with non-profit Clean Air-Cool Planet and the ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability, an international association of local governments in 67 countries.

The Initiative has set five milestones for reducing the city’s emissions, beginning with a baseline inventory of the city’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in 2006. In collaboration with the Green Government Task Force, the Initiative is currently developing an Action Plan proposing target levels of emissions and actions that both municipal government and local residents can take to curb emissions. Once an action plan has been developed, the plan will be presented to the City Council and the Mayor for implementation.
